Expert Skin Checks and Dermoscopy

At Icarus Skin Cancer Clinic, we provide thorough skin cancer checks for patients in Koo Wee Rup and Wonthaggi, the Shire of Cardinia, Casey, Bass Coast, and surrounding areas. Our experienced doctors use advanced dermoscopy and skin imaging to detect potential skin cancers early, ensuring timely and effective treatment. Regular skin checks are essential for maintaining skin health and preventing serious conditions.

Dermoscope Assessment

A dermoscope is a specialised microscope that allows doctors to examine the deeper structures of the skin. This advanced tool helps identify early signs of melanoma and other skin cancers with greater accuracy. By reducing unnecessary biopsies, dermoscopy improves diagnosis and treatment planning.

What Can Be Seen During a Dermoscopy Exam?

Our clinic uses high-resolution imaging to capture detailed visuals of skin lesions. These images help monitor changes over time and assist in precise skin cancer diagnosis.

Skin Imaging or Spot Photography

During a skin check, our doctors may take digital images of moles and lesions for future reference using Fotofinder. This allows for better tracking of any changes in the skin over time, leading to earlier detection of potential concerns. Skin imaging is particularly beneficial for patients with a history of skin cancer or multiple moles.

What Happens During a Skin Check?

A full-body skin examination typically takes around 20 minutes. Our doctor will assess your skin under bright illumination using a dermoscope and take images when necessary. You will be asked to undress down to your underwear so every area can be examined thoroughly. If any suspicious lesions are found, a biopsy may be performed immediately, or a follow-up appointment will be scheduled for treatment within a few days. A letter will always immediately be sent to your GP to keep them informed at every stage.

Fortunately, most of the time, there will be no lesions of concern, and all that will be required is a further regular check in 6 months or a year. The doctor will need to see you more frequently if you have a higher risk of further skin cancers.

How to Prepare for Your Skin Check

Please avoid wearing any makeup on your face or elsewhere. This includes tinted moisturiser or any other coloured cosmetic product. This is extremely important, as it is not possible to see through makeup, and this can lead to failure to diagnose dangerous skin cancers. If possible, try to remove nail polish from both the fingers and toes.

Following Up Your Skin Check

We recommend checking your skin monthly with the help of a partner or family member. Ask your hairdresser to examine your scalp, and for women, request a skin check during regular cervical screenings. If you notice any changes, book an appointment immediately. Regular professional skin checks provide peace of mind and help catch skin cancers early.
